Future Projects!

I never like to start new projects when I've got some obligation that needs immediate attention -- in the case for this month, it's been MOVING. I'm really bad at packing to move. I spend a lot of time sitting and staring, or trying to memorize where I put every little thing. "Okay... I need to remember... that this little scrap of fabric... is going right here." Sigh! The process of packing things into boxes, which shouldn't take long at all, has taken me all of a month. But we're making the move in two days! So after that, we can finally commence to makin' stuff!

The project that I have at the top of my list is a video project I wanna work on with Franklin. When we were doing the long-distance-relationship thing, Franklin and I made a bunch of songs for each other. The ones I made were ridiculously short and embarrassingly silly, but, I really want to go back to those songs we made each other and make videos for them - together!

Here is the first one I made him, and the first one we'll make a new video for:

"good things"

I didn't have any sort of audio program on my computer, so I used iMovie to piece together audio tracks so I could have multiple tracks playing at once. The problem with using iMovie, though, was that the end product was a video, not an mp3 file! So I had to lazily whip up some videos to accompany the songs, so I could send them to him via youtube. They're pretty awful. I was watching a lot of sesame street with my nephew around the time I made this video, if you couldn't tell. I still want to incorporate the sock puppet theme into the new video for this song but maybe use something a little less creepy. Yes, I put lipstick on my sock -- and, no, it didn't wash out. I mean, what else was I supposed to do?

Moonrise Kingdom

 1. Moonrise Kingdom in Seattle 2. Flowers by a rusty fence 3. Paint Peeling on a stop sign 4. Franklin being silly 5. My new vintage dress, hooray!

If you haven't seen Moonrise Kingdom yet, go, now! It was beautiful, ahh. I already wanna see it again. Sigh! Wes Anderson never ever disappoints. Even the American Express commercial he directed was amazing, haha. But anyways, yes. I won't say anymore than that. Go see it right now! and now, I'm going to go pack. Moving is kind of a pain in the butt, by the way. Pictures of the chaos to follow, maybe.

Fun with Film

Some pictures Franklin took on his Pentax SLR, with 35mm film:

1. Mt. Rainier 2. Firepit sans the fire 3. Dinner with ghosts.

(I lost that brooch I'm wearing in the last picture. It was my favorite...what a bummer. )

We stayed in a cabin at the base of Mt. Rainier. It was so awesome on the inside! Dream house, for sure. I'd like to go back with friends sometime - split the bill & stay up late talking and drinking under the stars. There was an attic bedroom that was so cozy! I want it. I love houses with lots of little nooks for sitting and reading, and windows to let in all the heavily cloud-filtered daylight we get here in the Northwest. Every bit of light helps - even if it's all cold and grey.

In other news: We're moving! Only about 10 miles North, but it's going to be awesome. Moving pictures are bound to follow. I'm going to miss our dusty little apartment!

Book & Quote brooches, yay!

I finally added some new brooches to the shop! I just started a new "Book & Quote" brooch set series, but I've only made one so far. It's a book I first read in seventh grade, and it's been one of my favorites ever since... On the Road, by Jack Kerouac:

I have no clue what to do next, though. Walden, maybe? That's pretty classic, and up there in my favorites. I'd look to Franklin's book collection for inspiration, but it's all sci-fi and fantasy, haha. Don't get me wrong, I like sci-fi and fantasy every once in a while, but I don't know how many people want to sport The Dragon Reborn on their lapel, hahaha.

Wedding stuff: the cake topper

Wedding posts are almost over! haha. Just a couple more details to share with you.

the cake topper:

We bought the cake at a local bakery in Everett, and it almost didn't survive the hour trip in the car, haha. I maybe kinda took a really sharp turn on the way to the wedding, and we almost lost the top tier - oops! haha.

The topper, we made out of some wooden pegs we got at the craft store, and I made my cake-topper "bouquet" out of the little discs of paper you get from hole-punching paper, haha. Then, the night before, I threw together a cake-sized pennant banner out of skewers, twine, and tea-stained graph paper. Oh, and hot glue! Boy, did that little hot glue gun come in handy. If you have a wedding on the horizon, I definitely recommend bringing a hot glue gun with you, just in case anything decides to disassemble before your eyes, haha.

I wonder if people actually use those plastic cookie-cutter cake toppers they sell in stores. You know, the ones where they haven't been updated since the early 90s, and the bride is always blonde? They always look so serious and stiff. Hmm.

Wedding Stuff: the bouquet

So, this was my bouquet! On the way back home, it was crushed, sadly. but I'm going to mend it, and hold onto it forever, I think. I feel too emotionally invested, haha. I made the paper roses using this tutorial I found here on 100 layer cake. Instead of just using pages from a book, I used tea-stained graph paper, pages of vintage magazines, super old sheet music and vintage maps of the Pacific Northwest. I added a feather, felt flowers and lace for color and texture, and you can't see it in the picture, but the handle is wrapped in burlap. So itchy!

This is definitely a time-consuming and frustrating project, but pretty rewarding in the end! :) 'specially 'cause it doesn't die on ya, like real flowers do! ;)

Wedding stuff: our CD wedding favors

Mix CD wedding favors, what what! We wanted to make mix tapes instead, but that would have taken SO long, and we just didn't have enough time. I drew this up in pen, colored it in with crayons and then made photo-copies in black & white, on cream colored paper, and glued them onto paper disc sleeves. Some might call it hokey, but I call it love. I feel like I'm some sort of a recovering perfectionist, or something. An imperfectionist? uh, sure. So I dig it alright.

Every good mix has a beginning, middle, and end. This mix wasn't our best, but we wanted it to include what we listened to on our drive down to California, what we listened to during the short period that we lived there, and finally, what we listened to on our way back up to Washington. We both have eerily similar taste in music (and everything else for that matter), and Franklin's first gift to me a long long time ago was this really amazing mix CD, which he named, "From the Land of the Mole People". Through it, I was introduced to a lot of my favorite bands. So a mix-CD wedding favor seemed pretty fitting for us. I think you might have to sign up on playlist.com before it'll let you access it, but you oughta LISTEN TO IT --> (Click here and you can listen to it while you click around on the internet!)

Wedding Stuff: The Reception Table

I am pretty much in love with this vintage suitcase -- and it was only 15 bucks!!! We used it as an "envelope box" and it doubled as a pretty sweet decoration for the reception table, too. Isn't it beautiful? heehee.

Back when Franklin and I were writing each other letters, he bought this really old typewriter, and we wanted to use that instead of a guest book (and it would have looked so perfect next to that suitcase!) but that didn't work out, unfortunately. So I sketched up some stuff, made some copies on card stock, and had it spiral-bound at Staples. Last minute guest book, success! Have a look:

We wanted it to feel more like a children's activity book than a guest book, so people could actually have some fun with it (I know I would personally be all over drawing things between fern fronds!). It was fun to see all the drawings people left for us. I almost forgot to leave a pen out, though! Oops. My 2-year-old nephew left us a page full of scribbles, and it nearly made me melt. So glad we went with a guest book instead of a typewriter!
